Can’t get to sleep and it’s not because I’m waiting for Risto. For once, I don’t feel like flying away with him. I’m not in the best-ever mood. This bedspread is too heavy. The sheet by itself isn’t enough. Dad has a saint on his wall. Does this mean he wants to be one? I picture him in a long black skirt with a pious look on his face. Creepy! Or a martyr—there my imagination stops.

Maybe he’s lying awake expecting a nun to show up in the moonlight to take him somewhere. The Taj Mahal? Or Heaven, which is where a nun might go. You might not make it back. You might not want to.

The way he’s talking—and acting—it’s completely possible he’ll decide to lock himself up in a monastery where the monks live in silence, going around with their heads bowed and hoods hiding their faces. Half my family would be gone, disappeared. Because I would hardly ever see him. He’d be a different person. He is already, and there’s nothing I can do about it. What am I supposed to think? This is my father.
